All About Nutrition and Smile Care During Pregnancy

Posted .

Your smile is important to Dr. Lee J. Cowles, DMD and our dental team and we are sad to tell you that it is in potential danger during your pregnancy. We strongly recommend that you keep up on oral hygiene (by brushing, flossing, and rinsing every day), visit your dentist every six months, and have a healthy and balanced diet. Nutrition is an important factor in your pregnancy—not only because it keeps your body healthy and strong, but also because it keeps your smile in tip-top shape. So, to help you know what to eat and drink for a healthy smile, we have provided the following tips:

· Eat as many healthy foods as possible, like fruits, vegetables, whole grain products (like cereal, breads, and crackers), and dairy products.

· Try to limit your intake of sugary foods, like candy, cookies, and cake. We also suggest limiting your soda and sugary drink intake.

· For snacking, choose to eat healthier foods, like cheese, yogurt, fruits, and vegetables.

· Drink plenty of fluoridated water throughout the day. Milk is another healthy beverage to consume. Juice, fruit-flavored drinks, and soft drinks, however, are beverages you should avoid drinking.

· If you hardly have an appetite because of nausea, we recommend eating small, healthy meals and snacks throughout the day instead of trying to eat big, heavy ones.
