Your Dental Cleaning Tools and Diet Can Affect Your Risk for Cavities

Posted .

Preventing cavities requires optimum dental tools and a clean, healthy diet. If your dental tools are not operating correctly, or cannot function as required, bacteria and plaque can be missed or simply spread around in your mouth and leave your teeth susceptible to enamel erosion. Likewise, the diet you have can influence which ingredients find their way into your mouth, which can heavily increase your risk for tooth decay.

Cavity prevention begins with ideal oral hygiene habits such as brushing and flossing. Naturally, you should brush twice daily and floss at least once daily. Use brushes that have soft bristles and floss that is shred resistant. In addition, you can ask your dentist or look for the ADA Seal of Acceptance on select tools that have been deemed safe and effective.

Some substances are more harmful than others in terms of potential cavities. Highly sugary products and those substances that are chewy and sticky are some of the most detrimental, as they can stick to your teeth and gums and continue to wear down your enamel long after consumption. Substitute these unwholesome products with a diet that is high in vitamins and minerals for a healthy smile.
